2005 BMW E60 M5

This car is a little unusual as a member of this collection. It doesn't really fit with the era that we focus on. Nevertheless, it is a classic in the making and this particular example has much to commend it, being totally stock and benefiting from a full BMW warrenty since Day 1. It has wanted for nothing and drives superbly

2005 BMW E60 M5

The E60 M5 was introduced in 2004, with a V10 engine and 7-speed paddle-shift SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) transmission linking the car with the BMW Sauber Formula One program. The E60 M5 was the world's first production sedan to use a V10 petrol engine. This generation of the M5 was also built in the E61 Touring body style, which was only sold in Europe. The E63/E64 M6 coupé and convertible are based on a shortened version of the M5 chassis and largely use the same mechanical components.

The official 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration figure is 4.7 seconds, however magazine tests have recorded figures down to 4.1 seconds. The E60 M5 was the fastest 4-door sedan available at the time of its introduction; top speed is electronically restricted to 250 km/h (155 mph) but could be raised to 305 km/h (190 mph) with the optional M-driver's package. The M5 has recorded a Nürburgring lap time of 8:13.

Upgrades over regular 5 Series models include a wider track, unique body panels, a colourful heads up display featuring navigation, control messages, speed, rpm and gear selection information, automated seat side bolsters, heated/ventilated seats and power rear curtain. The larger, flared front guards on either side also featured cooling vents, reminiscent of the 1970s BMW CSL. The wheels were of 19-inch diameter and the car has quad exhaust pipes at the rear.

OUR CAR

Our car is more than a bit special, and potentially unique. This car has had a full BMW warrenty since Day 1. That is almost 20 years! This means several things. Firstly, the car is totally stock and has never been messed with. Second, it has wanted for nothing, with all maintennace and other work being carried out by BMW main dealers. Third, every part that has been replaced is OEM.

On one occassion, an error during routine servicing by BMW caused damage to the engine, which was then replaced, under warrenty, by BMW. The replacement engine in the car has done a little over 20,000 miles. The SMG gearbox has also been replaced, under warrenty, approximately 10,000 miles ago.

This car has been treated with respect, by us and by the two previous owners. Always fuly warmed up before any spirited driving, no launch control starts or any other kind of abuse you see on Youtube videos. This car has a race derived engine, built to fine tolerances to provide an amazing driving experience. It deserves to be treated correctly. When you do that, it is very reliable and rewards with the most exhilerating driving experience. Just ask Jeremy Clarkson.
